Driving up standards in transport department
18th September 2007
Eight SITA Cornwall drivers based in St Austell, Redruth, Newquay, Falmouth, Connon Bridge and Plymouth have completed the SITA UK Driver Assessor Course, which now enables them to assess new drivers in the organisation to ensure they meet with SITA UK standards.
The newly qualified assessors are:
David Endean Ro-Ro driver based at Tregongeeves depot St Austell.
Norman Richards Ro-Ro driver based at Pool MRF depot Redruth.
Gary Dean Ro-Ro driver based at Trevenson Road depot Newquay.
Carl Edwards Ro-Ro driver based at Pool MRF depot Redruth.
Gary Mockler Skip driver based at Mabe depot Falmouth.
Steve Riley 10 ton Curtainsider driver based at Bodmin MRF depot.
Brian Cadwallader-Rose Ro-Ro driver based at Connon Bridge depot Nr Liskeard.
Chris Cox Artic Ejector driver based at Lee Mill depot near Plymouth.
The newly qualified assessors had to sit a pre-entry exam and attend a three-day course at different locations around Cornwall. All of the voluntary drivers passed the course with flying colours and will now take out new drivers on their inductions.
The course tested the drivers’ ability to select, plan and detail routes, and direct the driver over the routes correctly. It also teaches assessors to:
· understand and check driving licences
· carry out the basic eyesight test correctly
· and fully understand the different types of assessment
The eight drivers are also trained to correctly complete the SITA Driving Assessment Marking Sheet and Report so they can constructively analyse and measure drivers’ progress. Each year they will be required to take out existing staff to maintain high standards of heavy duty driving and to further develop their job and duties.
Louis de Poncheville, General Manager for SITA in Cornwall said, “I am very keen to support educational developments for our staff. This year we have completed more than 600 days of training which is actively pushing up the high standards of work practice within the company.”
