Extended summer opening hours for SITA Cornwall recycling centres
30th March 2008
From the 1st April, SITA Cornwall household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) will move to summer opening hours. HWRCs will still open at 0900 but will now close at 1800 enabling the public to have more opportunities to bring along items for recycling in the evenings. The summer opening hours will be operational until 30th September.
SITA Cornwall is now operating 11 recycling centres across Cornwall. The recycling centres take a wide range of items and are useful for those things that aren’t accepted by kerbside collection services or bring banks.
Louis de Poncheville, General Manager of SITA Cornwall said ‘One of our main priorities is to make recycling easier and more accessible for people. By extending the opening hours of the centres until 6pm, it is hoped people will fit in a visit to the recycling centre after work or a visit to the supermarket, reducing the need to make a special trip and encouraging more people to make use of the facilities.’
Since starting to deliver Cornwall’s Integrated Waste Management contract in November 2006, SITA Cornwall has made major improvements in the appearance and efficiency of HWRCs as part of a £15m programme to develop recycling facilities across the county. The improvements have helped to push up recycling rates at HWRCs every month since the contract start and the recycling rates at HWRCs currently stand at more than 50%.
Visitors to HWRCs are asked to segregate their waste before they arrive, to reduce the time they need to spend at the site, this helps to reduce queues and also helps to increase recycling rates. Visitors are also reminded that trade waste is not accepted at any HWRCs.
